The Newsroom Best Finale Ever!

On another note, jumping from Showtime to HBO, I really loved the season finale of The Newsroom.  I was a little skeptical about if Will and Mac would end together, but I’m glad they did.  The season kicked off in a funky place with the good-looking, fast-talking cast being hammered by a tough lawyer about a story called Genoa that went horribly wrong, and we were all wondering what the heck happened to Maggie‘s hair.  It went from nice long blonde to short chopped clown red.   Also Jim decided to get himself sent to New Hampshire to cover Mitt Romney in the election, so he can escape the pain of seeing Maggie with Don.  But let’s not forget the pictures that were posted of Sloan that indirectly brought her closer to Don by allowing them to discuss an intimate and personal issue. Throughout the season , there was relationship tension, characters feeling ashamed, guilty and constantly at each other’s throats.  Mac, Will and Charlie take the blame for Genoa and as a result suffer an enormous amount of guilt throughout the season and struggle with the decision if resigning is the right choice.  So the last episode was so great because Aaron Sorkin really wrapped everyone’s plot line up very nicely.  Will and Mac finally got together after had had a sudden and long overdue revelation that he needs to forgive Mac.  Sloan plants a surprise kiss on Don after she finds out about his selfless deed of paying a thousand dollars for a signed copy of her book. Jim convinces Maggie that she isn’t to blame for the kid’s death in Uganda and that she is tough.  Jim is also very busy apologizing to Lisa and asks her to talk to Maggie again because she needs her best friend at her side.  It doesn’t get better than this, folks.  Everyone is happy, paired up and still the fastest talkers in the world.

I talked to some of my friends about the season finale and they said it was too happy of an ending.  But I think we definitely earned the happy ending after being pulled into the struggle of all the characters having to deal with Genoa for 9 episodes, which is like 18 months in real time.  I was totally pumped to learn there will be a season 3.  I wonder if Will and Mac will be married by that point because time is catching up to the show after having somewhat recent events like Occupy Wall Street.  Speaking of OWS, I forgot to mention one of my favorite characters, Neil.  He was the guy from Slumdog Millionaire, and he’s back with a British accent writing Will’s blog on the show and delivering most of the funny lines.   I loved his plot line about trying to figure out how to correct a Wikipedia page that says Mac went to Cambridge instead of Oxford, or was it the other way around?  According to the show, which I’m going to take as fact, apparently you can’t edit your own Wikipedia page, even if the info is totally incorrect.  You have to get a third-party source to post an article with the correct info, and only then will Wikipedia correct it.  Who knew?   Anyway, I’m confident that Aaron Sorkin will continue to surprise and amaze us next season!

What do you think, did the season finale end with a satisfying ending or an unrealistic happy ending?  I suppose I could check out HBO’s page or reddit or any of the other sites, but I want to keep this between Newsroom friends 🙂
